The story
Anna is five, and everyone wants to know what she will be when she grows up. She does not know. There are too many things she would LOVE.
So her grandfather walks her through town to ask bakers, shopkeepers, cooks, and storytellers why they do what they do. Their answers are not job titles. They are lessons in curiosity, wonder, and appreciation.
By sunset Anna learns the wisest thing a child can learn. She does not have to choose just one path. She gets to grow into a whole world of possibilities.

Ever since having our child, Caleb, I have wanted to write about a question adults often ask the young. What do you want to do when you grow up?
It can sound harmless. Sometimes it is. It can also ask a child to audition for a future they have not lived yet. I wanted a gentler way to sit with that question. Not a lecture about careers. A walk.
If the question stays present, and stays connected to community, it can open a life instead of narrowing one.
