About
Driven by a foundation of relationship, I am on a mission to create a wiser, more compassionately connected world.
Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others. Jonathan Swift
Discovering vision
At sixteen I went to take the test for a driver's license. At the vision portion I could not even tell there were letters on the screen. After a few trips to eye doctors I was diagnosed with keratoconus. The cornea in my eyes was misshapen.
A challenge with physical vision can look like a disability. For me it awakened another kind of seeing. Rather than driving, I walked for miles each day in Olympia, Washington, noticing people and the living world around me.
West Coast pilgrimages
In 2012 that love of walking took me to Los Angeles. From there I began a months-long journey north along the West Coast. On the Oregon shore I realized it was not money that made the journey possible. It was the friendships made along the way.
We often live as though money is our biggest need for survival. Relationship is what lets us thrive.
I returned to walk those four hundred miles of Oregon coast in 2015, 2016, and 2018. It remains the best summer home I have ever had.
The work now
I write about philosophical questions with a simple aim: to unearth wisdom that is already present. I help people discover, grow, and share their vision for life and work through conversation and by building them a website. I make contemplative ambient music. And I wrote a children's book for my son Caleb, and for every child who is asked too early to name a single future.
I work as a communications designer, author, and educator through Raines Communications LLC.
